FAQ

 Shipping Questions

How long will it take to receive my order?

As noted during checkout, please allow approximately 10–14 days for your order to arrive. Most orders are typically delivered within 7 days, although delivery times can vary depending on the destination and carrier.

Occasionally, shipping carriers may experience delays due to weather, high shipping volumes, customs processing, or other circumstances outside of our control. For this reason, we recommend allowing the full 10–14 day delivery window.

Tracking information will be provided once your order has been shipped.

Where does my order ship from?

Gut Protocols is a Canadian company based in Moncton, New Brunswick.

Our SIBO Breath Test Kits are shipped directly from our Moncton office to customers across Canada.

Many of our professional-grade supplements and health products are currently fulfilled through our location in Kentland, Indiana. While we previously shipped these products directly from our Moncton location, increasingly complex Canadian import requirements for health products have led us to adjust our fulfillment process.

This allows us to continue providing our Canadian customers with access to the professional-grade products we carry while managing the import process on our end.

Will I have to pay additional duties, taxes, or import fees?

No, not with our standard shipping service.

For orders shipped using our standard shipping service, Gut Protocols covers the applicable duties, taxes, and import-related charges associated with bringing your order into Canada. You will not be asked to pay unexpected customs duties or import fees when your package arrives.

Express shipping is the exception. Express shipping for products shipped from our U.S. location is available by special request only and must be arranged with us by email before your order is placed.

If express shipping is requested, the customer is responsible for the full cost of express shipping, as well as any applicable duties, taxes, brokerage fees, or other import-related charges.

Unless express shipping has been specifically requested and arranged with us in advance, your order will be shipped using our standard shipping service, with applicable duties and taxes covered by Gut Protocols.

Do you offer express shipping?

Yes. Express shipping is available; however, the options differ depending on what you are ordering.

SIBO Breath Test Kits:
Our SIBO breath test kits are shipped directly from our Canadian location, and express shipping options are automatically available at checkout. Simply select your preferred shipping method when placing your order.

All Other Products:
The remainder of our products are currently shipped from our U.S. location. Express shipping for these products is available by special request only.

If you require express shipping for products shipped from our U.S. location, please contact us before placing your order so we can coordinate the request with our shipping department and confirm the available express shipping option and cost.

Why are duties and taxes not covered with express shipping?

Our standard shipping process from the U.S. to Canada is specifically arranged so that Gut Protocols can cover applicable duties, taxes, and import-related charges on your behalf.

Express shipments follow a different carrier and customs clearance process. The express services available to us do not use the same prepaid import arrangement as our standard shipping service. As a result, any applicable duties, taxes, brokerage fees, or other import charges must be paid directly by the recipient.

If payment is required, the carrier will typically contact the recipient during the customs clearance process with instructions for completing payment. These charges are assessed as part of the import and clearance process and are separate from the express shipping fee paid to Gut Protocols.

Please keep the following in mind when requesting express shipping:

  • You are responsible for the full cost of express shipping.
  • You are also responsible for any applicable duties, taxes, brokerage fees, or other import-related charges.
  • Express shipping provides an expedited carrier service but does not guarantee a specific delivery date.
  • Customs clearance requirements may affect the delivery timeline, even when an express service is used.
  • Once the shipment has been accepted by the carrier, Gut Protocols cannot be held responsible for carrier delays, customs delays, weather disruptions, or other circumstances outside of our control.
  • Express shipping charges are non-refundable in the event of a carrier or customs delay.

By requesting express shipping from our U.S. location, you acknowledge and accept the additional shipping cost, responsibility for any applicable import charges, and the possibility of unforeseen carrier or customs delays.

If you prefer to have applicable duties and taxes covered by Gut Protocols, your order can simply proceed using our standard shipping service, which is the default shipping method offered for these products.

Why is my Canadian order shipping from the United States?

Gut Protocols is headquartered in Moncton, New Brunswick, and our SIBO Breath Test Kits continue to ship directly from our Moncton office.

Many of our supplement and health product orders are currently fulfilled through our Kentland, Indiana location due to Canadian import requirements surrounding certain health products.

Regardless of which location fulfills your order, your purchase is made directly through Gut Protocols, and our team remains your point of contact for customer service and order support.

When will I receive my tracking information?

Tracking information is emailed once your order has been processed and prepared for shipment. Please allow some time for the carrier's tracking system to update after receiving your tracking number.

If your tracking information does not update immediately, this does not necessarily mean there is an issue with your shipment.

What happens if my shipment is delayed?

Once a package has been transferred to the shipping carrier, transit delays can occasionally occur that are outside of our control. Weather, transportation disruptions, customs processing, and unusually high carrier volumes can all affect delivery times.

If your order has exceeded our expected delivery window or you believe there may be an issue with your shipment, please contact us and we will be happy to review the tracking information with you.

What happens if my tracking shows my order was delivered, but I cannot find it?

Once a shipping carrier has confirmed delivery to the address provided at checkout, including documented proof of delivery, Gut Protocols is not responsible for packages that are subsequently lost, misplaced, or stolen from the delivery location.

Customers are responsible for ensuring that packages can be safely received at the shipping address provided. If you are concerned about package security, we strongly recommend monitoring your tracking information closely and making arrangements to retrieve your package as soon as possible after delivery.

If tracking shows your package as delivered but you cannot locate it, we recommend first checking around the property, with other members of the household, neighbours, building management, or other possible delivery locations. You should also contact the shipping carrier directly to request additional delivery information.

Gut Protocols will be happy to assist with available tracking information; however, orders for which the carrier has provided proof of delivery are not eligible for replacement or refund due to theft or loss occurring after confirmed delivery.

Returns, Refunds & Final Sale Policy Questions

Are supplements and health products eligible for returns?

No. All supplements, consumable health products, and ingestible items are considered final sale and are not eligible for returns or exchanges due to a change of mind, ordering error, or personal preference.

Due to the nature of these products and the strict quality and safety standards associated with health supplements, we cannot accept returns once an order has been shipped, except in cases where an item arrives damaged, defective, or incorrect.

Why are supplements and consumable health products final sale?

At Gut Protocols, product safety, quality, and integrity are our highest priorities.

Our final sale policy is in place for several important reasons:

  • Product Safety & Quality: Once supplements leave our facility, we can no longer verify how they have been stored, transported, or handled.
  • Storage & Handling Requirements: Many health products require appropriate storage conditions to maintain their quality and effectiveness. These conditions cannot be independently verified after delivery.
  • Tampering & Contamination Prevention: Even unopened or factory-sealed products may have been exposed to conditions that compromise their integrity.
  • Consumer Protection: To maintain our quality standards, we do not restock or resell supplements that have been returned by customers.

This policy helps ensure that every customer receives products that have been maintained within our controlled inventory and handling procedures.

Are there any exceptions to the final sale policy?

Yes. If your order arrives damaged, defective, or contains an incorrect item, please contact Gut Protocols within 3 Calender days of confirmed delivery.

We will gladly review the issue and arrange an appropriate replacement or refund where applicable.

To help us resolve the issue promptly, please include your order number, a brief description of the problem, and photographs of the affected product and packaging when possible.

Please note that requests submitted outside the 3-day reporting window may not qualify under our standard return process, subject to applicable consumer protection laws.

How do I request a return or replacement?

If you receive a damaged, defective, or incorrect product, please follow these steps:

  1. Contact Us Within 3 Days: Notify Gut Protocols within 3 calendar days of confirmed delivery.
  2. Provide Order Details: Include your order number, a description of the issue, and supporting photographs when available.
  3. Wait for Authorization: Our team will review your request and provide instructions if a return is required.
  4. Return Within 15 Days: If a return is authorized, the product must be received by Gut Protocols within 15 calendar days of the original delivery date, unless otherwise instructed.

Important: Please do not send products back without prior authorization. Unauthorized returns may not be accepted.

For safety reasons, not all damaged or defective products will need to be physically returned. Our team will provide instructions based on the circumstances.

How long does it take to receive my refund?

Once your return has been received, inspected (if required), and approved, your refund will be processed within 5 business days.

All refunds are issued to the original payment method used at checkout.

Please note that your financial institution or payment provider may require additional processing time before the funds appear in your account.

Are shipping charges refundable?

However, if your order arrives damaged, defective, or incorrect due to an error on our part, we will cover the applicable shipping costs associated with resolving the issue, including return shipping when required.

Original shipping charges may also be refunded when appropriate.

Shipping fees are not refunded for change-of-mind requests, customer ordering errors, or other circumstances outside our approved return exceptions, except where required by law.

Can I return an unopened or factory-sealed supplement?

No. Even if a supplement remains unopened and in its original factory-sealed packaging, it is still considered final sale.

Once a product has left our facility, we cannot independently verify the storage, handling, or environmental conditions to which it may have been exposed.

To protect product quality and customer safety, we do not accept returned supplements for resale.

What if I ordered the wrong product?

We understand that ordering mistakes can happen.

If you realize you've ordered the wrong product, please contact us as soon as possible.

If your order has not yet been processed or shipped, we will do our best to assist with a cancellation or modification.

Once an order has shipped, supplements and other ingestible health products are considered final sale and cannot be returned or exchanged due to an ordering error.

What if my package arrives damaged?

If your package arrives with visible damage, please photograph the outer packaging and affected products before discarding any materials.

Contact Gut Protocols within 3 calendar days of confirmed delivery so our team can assess the damage and determine the appropriate resolution.

Please retain the original packaging until our team has reviewed your request, as photographs or packaging may be required for shipping carrier claims.

What if I receive a product that is expired or has a quality issue?

If you receive a product that is expired upon delivery, appears defective, or raises a legitimate product quality concern, please contact us promptly with your order number, product details, and photographs where applicable.

We take product quality concerns seriously and will review the circumstances to determine the appropriate resolution, including replacement or refund when warranted.

Our standard reporting window is 3 calendar days from delivery. However, this does not limit any rights or remedies available under applicable consumer protection laws.

Can I cancel my order after placing it?

Orders may be cancelled or modified only if they have not yet entered processing or been shipped.

Please contact us immediately if you need to request a cancellation.

Once an order has been processed for shipment or dispatched, cancellation cannot be guaranteed. Supplements and ingestible health products remain subject to our final sale policy.

Does the final sale policy affect my consumer rights?

No. Our final sale policy does not exclude or limit any rights or remedies customers may have under applicable consumer protection legislation.

Where a product is defective, not as described, or otherwise subject to a legally required remedy, Gut Protocols will address the matter in accordance with applicable law.

Does Gut Protocols diagnose SIBO through its breath testing services?

No. Gut Protocols provides at-home SIBO breath testing services and laboratory reports that measure hydrogen (H₂) and methane (CH₄) levels in collected breath samples.

Test reports may identify gas patterns and findings that are consistent with commonly used clinical interpretation criteria. However, these findings do not constitute a medical diagnosis on their own.

Can I make medical decisions based solely on my SIBO breath test results?

Customers are encouraged to share their results with a qualified healthcare professional for appropriate interpretation and guidance regarding any necessary next steps.

Does Gut Protocols guarantee the accuracy of breath test results?

Gut Protocols follows established laboratory procedures for processing and analyzing breath samples. However, no laboratory test is entirely free from limitations or potential sources of error.

Results may be influenced by factors including sample collection technique, preparation instructions, timing, medications, and individual physiological differences.

Gut Protocols does not guarantee that breath testing will identify every possible digestive condition or provide a definitive explanation for a customer's symptoms.

All results should be interpreted within the context of a comprehensive clinical assessment by a qualified healthcare professional.

Should I consult a healthcare professional before taking supplements?

Yes. We strongly encourage customers to consult a qualified healthcare professional before starting any new supplement, dietary regimen, or health-related program.

This is particularly important for individuals who are pregnant or breastfeeding, taking prescription medications, managing existing medical conditions, preparing for surgery, or considering supplements for children.

Certain supplements may interact with medications, produce adverse effects, or be unsuitable for specific individuals.

Always follow the manufacturer's directions and carefully review all product warnings and precautions.

If you experience an unexpected or adverse reaction, discontinue use and seek appropriate medical advice. Seek immediate medical attention for serious symptoms.

Nothing in this disclaimer excludes or limits any legal rights, warranties, or remedies that cannot lawfully be excluded under applicable consumer protection or product liability laws.

 Health & Product Questions

Can Gut Protocols recommend which product I should take?

Gut Protocols can provide general product information, including information about ingredients, manufacturer directions, product formats, and other details provided by our suppliers.

However, we do not provide medical advice, diagnose health conditions, prescribe treatments, or provide individualized treatment protocols.

Many of our customers are well researched, understand the products they are purchasing, and have a good understanding of their own health needs. If you are unsure whether a particular product is appropriate for you, we recommend discussing it with your physician or qualified healthcare practitioner before use.

I have a question about a specific product. Who should I contact?

Please feel free to contact us directly with product-related questions. We are happy to provide information about the products we carry and, when necessary, obtain additional information from the manufacturer.

For questions involving your personal health, medical conditions, medications, treatment plan, or whether a particular product is appropriate for you, please consult your treating healthcare practitioner.

Can you tell me what dosage I should take?

We can provide the manufacturer's suggested use and label directions for the products we carry. However, we cannot determine an individualized dosage or treatment schedule based on your symptoms, medical history, or health condition.

If your healthcare practitioner has recommended a dosage that differs from the manufacturer's label, please follow up directly with that practitioner regarding their recommendation.

Can you tell me whether a supplement is safe to take with my medications?

We cannot assess potential interactions between supplements and your prescription or over-the-counter medications.

If you take medication or have an existing medical condition, please speak with your physician, pharmacist, or other qualified healthcare professional before introducing a new supplement.

Can Gut Protocols create a treatment protocol for me?

No. Although we carry a wide selection of professional-grade products commonly used by healthcare practitioners, Gut Protocols does not create individualized treatment protocols or prescribe treatment.

Treatment decisions should be made between you and your qualified healthcare practitioner based on your individual health history, symptoms, test results, medications, and other relevant factors.

Can you help me understand what a product is designed to support?

Absolutely. We can provide general educational information about a product, its ingredients, its intended nutritional or physiological support, and the manufacturer's suggested use.

This information is educational in nature and should not be interpreted as medical advice or as a recommendation to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease.

What if I experience a reaction or unexpected symptoms after taking a product?

If you experience an unexpected reaction or new symptoms after using a product, discontinue use and contact an appropriate healthcare professional for guidance.

For severe symptoms or a suspected medical emergency, seek immediate medical attention.

You are also welcome to contact Gut Protocols to report your experience so that we can document the issue and, where appropriate, communicate it to the product manufacturer.

Are the products sold by Gut Protocols intended to replace medical treatment?

No. Supplements and other health products sold through Gut Protocols are not intended to replace appropriate medical care, prescribed medications, or treatment recommended by your healthcare provider.

Our products are intended to complement an informed approach to health and wellness where appropriate.

Should I consult my healthcare practitioner before starting a new product?

If you have an existing medical condition, are pregnant or breastfeeding, take prescription medications, are preparing for surgery, or are uncertain whether a product is appropriate for you, we recommend consulting your physician, pharmacist, or qualified healthcare practitioner before use.

I already know which product I want. Do I need a practitioner to order it?

Many products available through Gut Protocols can be purchased directly without a practitioner referral. Customers who already know which products they wish to purchase are welcome to order directly through our website.

Certain professional products may have manufacturer-specific purchasing requirements. Where applicable, those requirements will be clearly communicated on the product page or during the ordering process.

Where can I find information about a product before ordering?

Each product page contains available information regarding the product, ingredients, format, suggested use, and other relevant details.

 Brand & Partnership Questions

Are the products sold by Gut Protocols authentic?

Yes. Product authenticity and supply-chain integrity are extremely important to us.

Gut Protocols works with established professional health and supplement brands and sources products directly from the manufacturers we work with or through their authorized distribution channels.

We do not knowingly source professional products from unauthorized marketplace sellers, liquidation sources, or unknown third-party resellers.

We understand the growing concern surrounding counterfeit, diverted, expired, improperly stored, or otherwise questionable health products sold online. Maintaining established relationships with our brands helps us provide our customers with confidence in both the products they purchase and where those products came from.

Do you purchase your products directly from the brands?

Yes, whenever applicable. Gut Protocols maintains professional accounts and relationships with the brands we carry and purchases directly from manufacturers or through their authorized distribution channels.

Some manufacturers use authorized Canadian distributors or other approved distribution partners rather than supplying every retailer directly. In these situations, we purchase through the manufacturer's approved channel.

We take these relationships very seriously and work to maintain the purchasing, pricing, advertising, distribution, and compliance requirements established by each brand.

How can I verify that Gut Protocols is an authorized retailer or practitioner?

We encourage you to verify our relationships with the brands we carry.

For many of our professional brands, Gut Protocols and/or our practitioner can be found through the manufacturer's official "Find a Practitioner," "Find a Retailer," or similar directory.

You are also welcome to contact a manufacturer directly and ask them to confirm our relationship or authorization to carry their products.

Verification methods vary between manufacturers, but we have no issue with customers independently verifying our professional relationships — in fact, we encourage it.

How do I know the products aren't counterfeit?

It starts with knowing where the products came from.

Gut Protocols sources through established manufacturer relationships and authorized supply channels rather than purchasing inventory from unknown marketplace sellers or unauthorized third parties.

This provides greater supply-chain traceability and helps reduce the risks associated with counterfeit, diverted, improperly stored, expired, or otherwise questionable inventory.

If you ever have concerns regarding a product purchased from Gut Protocols, please contact us. You are also welcome to contact the manufacturer directly to verify our relationship with the brand.

Why shouldn't I purchase these products from Amazon or other third-party marketplaces?

Many of the professional-grade brands carried by Gut Protocols maintain controlled distribution networks and may restrict or prohibit the sale of their products through open third-party marketplaces.

If you find one of these products listed on Amazon, eBay, or another marketplace, we recommend verifying that the individual seller is authorized by the manufacturer before purchasing.

An unauthorized listing does not necessarily mean that a product is counterfeit. However, when products are sold outside of a manufacturer's authorized distribution network, it may be more difficult to verify their source, authenticity, storage conditions, handling, expiration history, or chain of distribution.

Many of the brands we carry are professional-grade products traditionally distributed through healthcare practitioners, professional accounts, and authorized retailers.

When in doubt, contact the manufacturer directly or use the brand's official practitioner or retailer directory to confirm that you are purchasing through an authorized source.

Why should I purchase from Gut Protocols instead of a large online marketplace?

When purchasing professional health products, where you purchase them matters.

Gut Protocols is an established Canadian business that works directly with professional health brands and their authorized distribution networks. We know the products we carry, maintain relationships with our suppliers, and provide real customer support when questions or concerns arise.

Purchasing through Gut Protocols also means there is accountability behind your order. If there is ever a concern regarding a product, packaging, shipment, or manufacturer-related issue, you have a Canadian business you can contact directly.

Our goal isn't simply to sell products. It's to provide a trusted source for professional-grade products backed by legitimate brand relationships, responsible sourcing, and knowledgeable support.

Are all of the products you carry practitioner-grade?

Many of the brands carried by Gut Protocols are considered professional-grade or practitioner-focused brands and have traditionally been distributed through healthcare practitioners, professional accounts, and authorized retailers.

Distribution requirements vary by manufacturer and product. Some products may be available directly to consumers, while others may have additional practitioner or professional requirements.

Regardless of the distribution model, Gut Protocols follows the applicable requirements established by the individual manufacturer.

Does Gut Protocols follow manufacturer pricing policies?

Yes.

We respect the pricing policies established by the brands we represent, including Minimum Advertised Price (MAP) policies where applicable.

Some manufacturers place restrictions on advertised pricing, promotions, discount codes, marketplaces, and other sales practices. We work within these requirements to maintain our professional relationships and protect the integrity of the brands we carry.

Do you follow each brand's compliance requirements?

Yes. Maintaining strong manufacturer relationships is extremely important to us.

Gut Protocols makes every reasonable effort to comply with each manufacturer's applicable requirements regarding product representation, advertising, pricing, distribution, resale, and brand usage.

These policies can vary between manufacturers and can change over time, so we periodically review our product listings and marketing practices to remain aligned with current brand requirements.

Are you affiliated with the brands you sell?

Gut Protocols is an independent Canadian retailer and practitioner business.

We maintain professional relationships with numerous health and supplement manufacturers, but carrying a brand does not mean Gut Protocols owns, controls, or is part of that company.

Depending on the manufacturer, our relationship may include an authorized practitioner, professional account, retailer, reseller, wholesale, or approved distribution arrangement.

Why aren't some professional products available everywhere online?

Some professional brands intentionally control how and where their products are distributed.

Depending on the manufacturer, products may be available primarily through healthcare practitioners, professional accounts, authorized retailers, approved online sellers, or specific distribution partners.

Controlled distribution can help manufacturers maintain greater oversight of product representation, pricing, distribution, and supply-chain integrity.

Why might your price be different from another website?

Professional brands may establish pricing policies that authorized sellers are expected to follow.

Prices can also vary due to manufacturer-authorized promotions, Canadian distribution costs, exchange rates, shipping costs, or manufacturer price changes.

If you find a professional product advertised at a price that appears unusually low compared with other authorized sellers, we recommend verifying whether the seller is authorized by the manufacturer before purchasing.

Do you purchase products from Amazon, eBay, or other online marketplaces for resale?

No. We do not rely on consumer marketplaces or unknown marketplace sellers as a source of inventory for the professional products we offer.

Our inventory is sourced through established manufacturer relationships and authorized supply channels.

This is an important distinction for us and an integral part of maintaining the trust of our customers and brand partners.

Can I contact a manufacturer to verify Gut Protocols?

Absolutely.

If you would like additional reassurance before purchasing, you are welcome to contact the manufacturer directly and ask about Gut Protocols.

Where available, you can also search the manufacturer's official practitioner, professional, or authorized retailer directory.

We believe customers should know who they are purchasing from and should feel comfortable verifying the legitimacy of the seller.

What happens if I have concerns about the authenticity or condition of a product I receive?

Please contact us before using the product if something doesn't look right.

Manufacturers occasionally update labels, branding, bottles, packaging, capsule appearance, serving information, or formulations. As a result, a product may look somewhat different from a previous order without there being anything wrong with it.

If you have a concern, we can review it with you and, when appropriate, work with the manufacturer or supplier to help verify the product.

Are your products stored and handled properly?

We take product handling and storage seriously and follow applicable manufacturer guidance for the products we carry.

Where manufacturers specify particular storage or handling requirements, we make reasonable efforts to follow those requirements while products are in our possession.

Why does Gut Protocols place so much emphasis on its brand partnerships?

Because trust matters when you're purchasing professional health products.

We want our customers to know who they are purchasing from, where their products originated, and that there is a legitimate professional relationship behind the brands offered through Gut Protocols.

For us, manufacturer partnerships are much more than a way to purchase inventory. They are long-term professional relationships that we work hard to maintain through responsible sourcing, accurate product representation, compliance with brand policies, and respectful business practices.

Ultimately, our goal is simple: to provide our customers with a trusted Canadian source for professional-grade health products and the confidence of knowing there is a real business, real brand relationships, and real support behind every order.

Possibly, but please contact us as quickly as possible.

We pride ourselves on processing and fulfilling orders quickly, so the window for making changes or cancelling an order can be quite short. If you need to change or cancel an order, please contact us within the first few hours after placing it.

Once an order has been processed or shipped, we may no longer be able to make changes or cancel it.

Can I use more than one discount code on an order?

No. Only one discount code can be applied to an order.

Yes. Subscription options are available on select products for customers who prefer the convenience of automatic recurring orders.

Availability and subscription frequency options will be displayed on eligible product pages.

Yes. You can manage your subscription online at any time.

You can modify or cancel your subscription through your online subscription account, giving you control over your recurring orders without having to contact us each time.

Do you offer practitioner pricing?

We work to keep our regular online pricing competitive while providing access to a wide selection of professional-grade health and wellness products.

What currency will I be charged in?

Our website is designed to display pricing based on the country or region you are shopping from.

The applicable pricing and currency will be shown on the website and during checkout before you complete your purchase.

 SIBO Questions

What is SIBO?

Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth (SIBO) is a condition where excessive bacteria build up in the small intestine — a section of the digestive tract that’s normally low in bacterial population.

The small intestine is crucial for breaking down food and absorbing nutrients. But when bacteria from the large intestine migrate upward, or when conditions like sluggish motility or low stomach acid reduce our natural defenses, things start to go sideways. Low stomach acid, in particular, is a major factor — it’s your first line of defense against invaders, and without enough of it, bacteria have a much easier time setting up shop where they don’t belong.

Even more surprising? Excessive social media use has been linked to disrupted vagus nerve function — the very nerve responsible for gut-brain communication and healthy motility. In today’s high-stimulus digital world, nervous system dysregulation could be another hidden contributor to SIBO.

The result? Food ferments in the wrong part of the gut, triggering symptoms like bloating, gas, abdominal cramps, and unpredictable bowel movements.

In fact, up to 80% of people diagnosed with Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) may actually have undiagnosed SIBO — making it a far more common (and overlooked) root cause of digestive distress than most realize.

What are some common triggers or root causes of SIBO?

Low or no stomach acid
Excessive social media use
Pancreatic enzyme and/or bile insufficiency
Hypothyroidism/Hashimottos
Chronic stress
Infections (viral/bacterial/parasitic)
Chronic constipation
GI tract dysfunction (ileocecal valve)
Nerve dysfunction

What symptoms are commonly associated with SIBO?

Bloating (especially after meals — that “six-months-pregnant” feeling)
Gas and belching
Abdominal discomfort or cramping
Diarrhea, constipation, or a mix of both
Fatigue
(bacteria compete with you for nutrients, leaving you drained)
Brain fog and difficulty concentrating
Food intolerances, especially to carbs and fermentable fibers (FODMAPs)
Nutrient deficiencies (like B12, iron, and fat-soluble vitamins)
Unintended weight loss or weight gain
Skin issues
 like acne or rosacea

How can SIBO impact your health?

SIBO (Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth) doesn’t just cause digestive discomfort — it can have a ripple effect throughout the entire body.
When bacteria overgrow in the small intestine, they interfere with how you digest food, absorb nutrients, and regulate immune and nervous system function. Over time, this disruption can contribute to or worsen a wide range of conditions, including:
Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s disease
Multiple Sclerosis
Type 2 diabetes and high blood pressure
Autoimmune diseases
Fibromyalgia and Chronic
Fatigue Syndrome
Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS)
Acid reflux and leaky gut
Brain fog and mood disorders
Restless Leg Syndrome
Acne and skin inflammation
Unwanted weight loss or weight gain
This happens because the bacterial imbalance can lead to chronic inflammation, nutrient deficiencies (like B12, iron, and fat-soluble vitamins), hormonal imbalances, and damage to
the gut lining — all of which impact key systems in the body.

In short: SIBO is not just a gut issue. It can be the hidden root cause of health problems that seem totally unrelated to digestion. Getting it under control can be life-changing — physically, mentally, and emotionally.

Lactulose vs. Glucose Breath Test – What's the Difference?

Lactulose Breath Test

Lactulose is a synthetic sugar that is not absorbed in the small intestine. It travels through the entire small intestine and into the colon. If bacteria are present, they ferment the lactulose and produce hydrogen and methane gases, which are expelled through the breath. This is how SIBO is detected. The test duration for lactulose is typically 3 hours. Because it travels through the full small intestine and into the colon, it can detect overgrowth in both the upper and lower (distal) areas — which is key, as SIBO often occurs in the distal portion.

Glucose Breath Test
Glucose is a simple sugar that is rapidly absorbed in the upper small intestine. If bacteria are present in that upper section, they ferment the glucose and produce gas, which is expelled through the breath. This is how SIBO is detected. The test lasts about 2 hours, if not sooner. Because it’s absorbed quickly, glucose may miss overgrowth in the lower part of the small intestine, where SIBO is more common.

Key Differences:
Absorption & Reach
Glucose: Fast absorption → Best for detecting upper (proximal) SIBO
Lactulose: Travels farther → Detects both upper and lower SIBO

Diagnostic Accuracy
Glucose: May miss distal SIBO
Lactulose: More comprehensive coverage — typically the preferred test

Note: Some practitioners prefer glucose over lactulose for various clinical reasons, while others rely on lactulose for broader coverage. In many cases, the choice also comes down to personal preference or specific testing goals. If you're unsure, check with your practitioner.

What is the prep diet?

The SIBO breath test requires a 24- to 48-hour prep diet before your test. This short-term, low-fermentation diet is essential to help "quiet" the gut and ensure accurate results.

During this time, you'll need to avoid all non-essential medications, supplements, and probiotics — including things like over-the-counter painkillers, allergy meds, and antacids. If you're unsure whether something is essential, it's best to consult your prescribing physician.

The goal of the prep diet is simple: starve the bacteria. Since bacteria feed on plant fibers, sugars, and fermentable foods, this diet cuts off their fuel source so we can better detect any abnormal gas production during the test.

Allowed foods:

Unprocessed meat, poultry, fish, and seafood (not cured, brined, or seasoned)

Plain white rice (Basmati or
Jasmine only)

Eggs

Clear meat broth (no bones,
cartilage, or vegetables)

Fats and oils (butter, coconut
oil, olive oil, vegetable oil, or lard)

Salt and pepper (no added
herbs, garlic, or spice blends)

Weak black coffee (No Tea's, herbal or otherwise)

Plain water (no added minerals
or flavoring)

This isn’t a long-term diet — it's just for the 1–2 days leading up to your breath test. After the prep diet, you'll switch to a 12-hour fast the night before your test, then begin testing
in the morning.

The prep diet is incredibly restrictive. Can I replace foods or make substitutions?

We get it — the prep diet isn’t fun. It’s bland, limited, and restrictive by design. Unfortunately, it’s also non-negotiable if you want an accurate SIBO breath test result.

The reason substitutions aren’t allowed is because even small changes (like switching white rice for brown, or adding a splash of almond milk to coffee) can feed bacteria, interfere with fermentation patterns, and throw off your results.

Think of it like prepping your gut for a clean reading — no extra noise, no hidden variables.

So while it might not be the most exciting 24–48 hours of your life, it’s a temporary sacrifice that sets you up for answers, clarity, and next steps. The good news? It’s over quickly, and you’ll go back to eating normally right after the test.

Hang in there — your gut (and your future self) will thank you.

Do I have to eat everything on the prep diet?

No, you don’t have to eat everything listed on the prep diet — it’s not a checklist. The goal is simply to eat only from the allowed foods, but you don’t need to force anything you wouldn’t normally eat.

For example:

If you don’t eat grains, skip the rice.

If you avoid eggs, don’t add them in just for the prep.

If meat is your go-to, stick with that.

Just choose from the approved options based on your usual
eating preferences. The important part is not what you eat — but what you don’t:
avoid all fermentable foods, plant products, sugars, and anything off-list.

Keep it simple, stick to what works for your body, and you'll be good to go.

Can I eat cheese on the prep diet?

Many practitioners may choose to modify the prep diet based on their own clinical experience. However, we follow only the guidelines developed by QuinTron, the manufacturer of the SIBO breath test. These guidelines are designed to maximize test accuracy — and dairy, including cheese, is not on the approved food list.

That said, some practitioners may allow small amounts of hard, aged cheeses, since they contain very little lactose — and the more aged the cheese, the less fermentable sugar remains.

If your practitioner recommends including hard cheese, that decision is between you and them. We strongly advise against making any food substitutions without medical guidance, as this could compromise the results.

If you find the prep diet too restrictive and are considering cheese on your own, please proceed with caution — and only choose non-processed, aged cheeses (no soft or flavored varieties). But again, for best accuracy, we recommend sticking to the official prep diet as closely as possible.

When in doubt, leave it out.

Can I eat brown rice, quinoa, or other grains on the prep diet?

No — the only grain allowed on the prep diet is plain white Basmati or Jasmine rice. These varieties are recommended because they’re low in fiber, low-residue, and have the lowest glycemic index of all rice types — making them less likely to feed bacteria in the small intestine.

Other grains like brown rice, quinoa, oats, or whole wheat contain more fiber and complex carbohydrates, which SIBO-related bacteria love to ferment. Including them can lead to inaccurate breath test results.

And remember: if you don’t normally eat rice, you
don’t need to add it in just for the prep diet. Simply choose from the other
approved foods that you would typically eat.

Bottom line: stick to the prep list exactly as outlined. Even small substitutions can affect the outcome of your test.

What if I'm a vegetarian or vegan?

The SIBO prep diet is intentionally restrictive — it eliminates plant products, sugars, and fermentable carbohydrates for 24–48 hours prior to testing to help starve the bacteria and get the most accurate results.

For individuals following a vegan or vegetarian diet, this can be challenging — especially since most plant-based foods are high in fiber and fermentable sugars, which can interfere with test accuracy. Here is a small guide to follow:

Vegetarian & Vegan-Friendly foods you can eat:

✅ Plain Tofu (unseasoned, not marinated)

✅ White Rice (plain, no seasoning)

✅ Zucchini (peeled, well-cooked)

✅ Carrots (peeled, well-cooked)

✅ Potatoes (peeled, boiled or baked plain)

✅ Small amounts of oil (olive oil, coconut oil)

Quick Sample Meal Ideas

Steamed zucchini and carrots with a drizzle of olive oil

Plain white rice with tofu

Baked peeled potato with a small amount of coconut oil

Herbal tea or black coffee (no creamers or sweeteners)

Important Notes

Keep meals simple — avoid sauces, seasonings, and spices that could interfere with the test.

Stick to low-residue, low-fiber foods — the goal is to minimize any fermentation in the gut.

No snacking or grazing — stick to clear, light meals.

12-hour fast before the test — water only!

Bottom line: accurate results depend on strict adherence. If modifications are necessary for ethical or medical reasons, get professional guidance so you can still get meaningful data from your test.

Why is the meat broth so specific on the prep diet?

Great question — and an important one.

Regular bone broth is often made using cartilaginous bones and connective tissue. While that’s great for joint health under normal circumstances, it’s not ideal before a SIBO test. That’s because when bones and cartilage are simmered, they release olysaccharides — specifically glucosaminoglycans
(GAGs) — which can feed bacterial overgrowth and skew your test results.

For the prep diet, broth must be meat-only. That means:

No bones

No cartilage

No skin or connective tissue

No vegetables, herbs, or seasonings (besides salt and pepper)

No store-bought broths unless they meet all of the above criteria — which most do not

Your best option? Make it at home using just meat and water, seasoned lightly with salt and pepper if desired. It’s simple, clean, and won’t interfere with the test.

Can I eat cured meats, lox, or sausage on the prep diet?

No. All meats consumed during the prep diet must be plain and unprocessed, with no added sugars, brines, cures, or seasoning blends.

That means avoiding:

Cured meats (like prosciutto, salami, or bacon)

Lox or smoked fish

Sausages or deli meats (even if labeled “natural” or “organic”)

Any meat with added herbs, garlic, spices, or marinades

Why? Because these extras often contain sugars, preservatives, or fermentable compounds that can feed bacteria and interfere with your test results.

Stick to simple, unseasoned cuts of meat, poultry, or fish — cooked plainly with only salt and pepper. When in doubt, choose fresh over packaged, and skip anything with a label full of ingredients.

Can I eat sushi on the prep diet?

Sashimi — plain raw fish without sauce — is acceptable on the prep diet. However, most other types of sushi should be avoided.

Here’s why:

Nigiri (fish over rice) is typically made with seasoned rice that contains sugar and vinegar — both of which can feed bacteria and compromise test accuracy.

Sushi rolls (maki) often contain vegetables, seaweed, sauces, and added sugars — all of which are off-limits.

The only potential exception is homemade Nigiri made with plain, steamed white Basmati or Jasmine rice and no added ingredients or sauces. Even then, proceed with caution — most sushi-style rice is sticky because of sugar or other additives.

Bottom line: Stick to plain sashimi if you really want sushi-style protein — otherwise, it’s best to skip sushi altogether during the
prep phase.

What about smoking or alcohol during the prep diet?

Avoid Completely!

Do you offer hydrogen sulfide (H₂S) SIBO testing?

Not at this time. Perhaps in the near future.

However, hydrogen sulfide (H₂S) SIBO is a newer subtype of SIBO that’s getting more attention in the research world. While we’re excited to offer H₂S testing in the near future, here’s what we want you to know right now:

Why we haven’t added it yet:

Cost – H₂S testing is currently more expensive than standard hydrogen and methane breath testing. Pricing can vary by lab, and for many people, it’s not yet a cost-effective first step.

Accuracy – H₂S testing methods are still being refined. False positives and false negatives are more common compared to traditional testing, which can make results harder to trust.

Limited research – There’s still a lot we don’t know about H₂S SIBO. With fewer clinical studies and real-world cases, interpreting results — and knowing how to treat them — can be tricky.

Complex interpretation – Different bacterial strains produce varying levels of hydrogen sulfide, and the clinical significance of those levels isn’t always clear. This can lead to uncertainty in diagnosis and treatment.

Treatment protocols are evolving – While there are emerging protocols for H₂S SIBO, they aren’t yet as well-defined as those for hydrogen or methane overgrowth. Practitioner approaches can vary widely.

Why we continue to use hydrogen and methane testing:

It’s cost-effective

It’s widely validated

It comes with clearer treatment guidelines

It has years of clinical research behind it

For now, hydrogen and methane breath testing remains the gold standard — and it’s what we trust to give our clients the most accurate and actionable results.

We’re keeping a close eye on H₂S testing as it evolves, and we’ll be adding it to our offerings as soon as we feel it meets the same high standard we expect for all of our diagnostic tools.
